Ol pejeta conservancy is one of the unique tourism destinations in Kenya which is less-known to the tourists. The conservancy is located in Nanyuki County and it takes approximately 3- 4 hours to drive from Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, to Ol pejeta. For luxury travellers or any tourist who wishes to use air transportation, there are scheduled chartered flights from Nairobi to Nanyuki airstrip which is approximately 13km away from the conservancy. Ol pejeta conservancy started as a ranch in the early 1940s however today it is has become an iconic tourism destination in Kenya.

Chimpanzee tracking

The sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary in Ol pejeta conservancy is the only tourism destination in Kenya where you stand a chance to trek the chimpanzees. The sanctuary offer hope to chimpanzees which are ailing, abandoned, and orphaned. Chimpanzee trekking is one of the popular activities in Africa. During the chimpanzee tour, you will spot the chimpanzee’s various instinctive and non-instinctive behaviors. It is common to see young joyous chimpanzees jumping from one tree to another while showing off their acrobatic styles. It is a lifetime activity that truly adds value to your trip in Kenya.

Wildlife

Due to the conservational efforts at the sanctuary, Ol pejeta conservancy hosts several wildlife species. It is possible to spot the big 5- lions, Elephants, Leopards, Buffaloes and Rhinos during the visit to the Ol pejeta. Other wildlife species to witness include Oryx, African wild dog, serval, cheetah, zebra, jackal, hyena, hippos, impalas, baboons, elands, hartebeest, gazelles, bat-eared fox, vervet monkeys, giraffes and many more. Spotting wildlife is common through game drives however biking and nature walk tours are also possible. One of the factors that have contributed to the success of the wildlife conservation efforts is involving the local population, the gate fees and other funds collected from the sanctuary are used to facilitate many community-based programs such as healthy and educational programs. In addition, the conservancy is constantly monitored by Dogs, Drones and Armed teams to fight poaching.
